Oxford School Yearbooks
The OHS is gradually adding to our digitized collection of yearbooks from the Oxford High School / Oxford Regional High School. Material from prior to 1953 is difficult to find, with many documents being lost to the fire that claimed the school building. If you have school-related material that could add to our collection, please drop us a line! We would be pleased to give that material a home, or digitize it for online use and return the original material to its owner. Our collection of digitized yearbooks is available here: |
Oxford's once-proud High.
School building was reduced to ashes as flams swept through the old wooden structure this morning. When he lett his home nearby at about 5.30 this morning to go to the school the janit-or, Mr. Ira Simpson, noticed flames breaking through the roof on the left side of the building. Before he could put in the alarm the siren started to blow, awakening the town to its biggest fire in years. From the beginning it was apparent that the school was doomed and nothing was saved from the two upper stories. Some of the desks, laboratory, manual training and domestic science equipment was saved as well as the radio and one piano. The fire apparently started in the music room, as the first flames broke through the roof a-bout over the left side door.. The cause of the outbreak is un-known, but there was no wiring in the section where it started. The old school was built in 1898 and at that time was one of the finest in the province. However in recent years the building has been greatly overcrowded and believed by many to be a fire trap. It is well that the fire o-curred during the night, when the classrooms were not filled with children. The loss of the school brings to a head the matter of a new school for Oxford, which has been a subject of much controversy during the last few years. However, one new school may not be sufficient, as it was planned to use the old school for Grades 1 to 6, in the event that a Rural High was built here. Chairman of the School Board Perce H. Swan stated this morning that a meeting would be called today to seek temporary classrooms for the school children. There was $45,000 insurance on the school and equipment. —The Oxford Journal, February 1951 |
