Early Settlement

Scottish born William Allan (1718 -1785) married Isabella Maxwell, 9 July 1744, d. 5 August 1767. Allan served in the British Military and came to Canada 1749, resided in Halifax for estimated three years before settling in Fort Lawrence. He was later circa 1759 awarded fertile farmland where he settled.
William Allan married a second time.

Following the expulsion of the Acadians in 1755, the British government awarded parcels of land to loyal supporters. In 1784 William Allan was awarded 4 (500 acre) grants of land where Oxford now stands. Upon his death in 1785 these grants of land were transferred to his heirs: William Jr, Winkworth, Isabella and George.

Children:
1. John, born Jan. 3, 1746. Edinburgh Castle, m. 10 Oct 1767 Mary Patton; d. 7 Feb. 1805 in Lubec (Maine).
2. Mary, b. Aug. 16, 1747, died Dec. 22, 1747.
3. Elizabeth, b. Dec. 25, 1750, married Aug. 27, 1772, John George Pyke.
4. William, b. Oct. 27, 1752, died Oct. 4, 1806, married in 1787, Sarah Dixson; removed from Halifax to Fort Cumberland.
5. George, b. Sept. 30, 1754, died May 19, 1804.
6. James, b. Aug. 25, 1756, died Nov. 1, 1757.
7. Jean, b. April 10, 1759, married Feb. 7, 1775, Thomas Cochran.
8. Winckworth, b. Nov. 21, 1760.
9. Isabel, b. July 23, 1762.



In 1792 Richard Thompson purchased lots 1,2 & 3. Richard married Dorothy Patton, sister to Mary Patton, wife of John Allan.
